In a far-off land, there resided a washerman who owned a thin and feeble donkey.
The washerman pondered, “It’s high time I start providing my donkey with proper nourishment to enhance his strength and well-being.”
After that, he should be able to carry heavy loads on his back.”
The question arose, from where would the washerman obtain the grass to feed the donkey?
“No one will give me any grass for free,” thought the washerman. “And if I let the donkey graze in a field, the Watchmans are sure to beat him to death. What can I do in this situation?”
One day, when the washerman had gone to another village for some work, he bought a tiger-skin.
Now every night, the washerman clothed the donkey in the tiger-skin and set him free to graze in the nearby fields. The donkey, clothed in the tiger-skin, would graze to his heart’s content.
The following morning, before dawn, the washerman would return to the field, collect his donkey, and bring him back to his house. Once there, he would remove the tiger-skin from the donkey’s body.
Every night, the donkey turned into a tiger and grazed happily in the nearby fields. This continued for many nights.
“A tiger has often been spotted in the fields at night.” The news spread like wildfire. Now even the watchmen of the fields were scared to guard the fields at night.
Meanwhile, the donkey enjoyed grazing in different fields every night. Soon he became very strong and healthy.
On a typical night, the washerman dressed up his donkey in a tiger skin and released him to graze in a field.
While the donkey was enjoying his peaceful meal, he heard another donkey braying in the distance.
The washerman’s donkey couldn’t resist the temptation to join in and began braying loudly, eager to chew on the grass in his mouth.
He perked up his ears, raised his head high, and let out the loudest bray he could muster.
However, his loud braying caught the attention of the field’s watchman, who picked up his stick and called for nearby watchmen to come.
“Look!” he shouted, pointing towards the donkey, “the tiger is braying!” All the watchmen gathered together and mercilessly thrashed the ‘tiger.’ The poor donkey was left lying in the field, barely alive.
