A Swan King was ruling over the beautiful grass island. The Swan King’s administration was aided by a Sparrow, his Chief Minister, who helped him oversee the kingdom.
One day, while sitting regally atop a lotus flower that served as his throne, the Swan King was paid a visit by a flying crane.
The crane informed the Swan King that the Dragon Island was now ruled by a peacock and a vulture was his Chief Minister.
The Crane said, “I traveled to Dragon Island to promote your reputation. However, the island is now under the governance of a peacock and his Chief Minister, a vulture. While engaging in casual conversation, I became embroiled in a heated dispute with the Peacock King’s attendants.”
“what was the problem?” the Swan King asked.
The Crane told, “My declaration was that our king is the most powerful and superior”.
But they contested that their king held that distinction, leading to a heated altercation. During the dispute, one of the Peacock King’s aides viciously attacked me with their beak, leaving me severely injured. Subsequently, they bound me and escorted me to the Peacock King, who was accompanied by a parrot. The parrot commented that their island was also governed by the Peacock King.
The insult was too much to bear. Overcome with anger, I lashed out and told them….”
The Swan King asked, “Can you tell me what you said to them?”.
“My message to them was clear,” said the Crane. “Merely asserting your claim does not entitle you to rule over this island. Our Swan King also holds dominion over Dragon Island, and the only way to determine true sovereignty is through battle. I hereby challenge you to a fight between our kingdoms to prove our strength. The Peacock responded, “Very well, go inform your Swan King that I shall arrive with my army.”
The news spurred the Swan King into action, and he quickly began making preparations for the upcoming battle.
Chief Minister Sparrow advised him, “We need to prioritize fort repairs, as well as ensuring that our troops are properly equipped, and our granaries are fully stocked.”
Meanwhile, the Peacock King asked for the advice of his Chief Minister, the Vulture.
The Vulture said, “Our strategy involves sending a parrot to act as our messenger to the Swan King, while we also send a crow to spy on the enemy.”
After arriving at the Swan King’s kingdom, the Crow utilized his intellect and quick thinking to gain the trust of the ruler. Despite repeated cautionary advisements from his Chief Minister Sparrow, warning him not to place faith in the Crow, the Swan King chose to disregard the warnings.
On the fateful day, the Peacock King and his army marched towards the Swan King’s kingdom.
However, the Swan King’s army was equally prepared, and amidst cries of “Hail the Swan King,” they fiercely attacked the enemy.
What followed was a dreadful battle, resulting in the death of many soldiers. During the chaos, a split emerged within the Peacock King’s army, causing the King to feel worried and uncertain.
Nonetheless, his wise Chief Minister, the Vulture, reassured him of their victory.
The Vulture, assisted by the Crow who was acting as their spy, devised a strategy to conquer the adversary’s domain. The Crow had eagerly anticipated this opportunity.
During the evening, the Swan King’s forces were rejoicing over the fracture within the enemy ranks, leading them to become careless and reckless as they began to believe in an assured victory. Exploiting the moment of vulnerability, the Crow set the fort’s gate ablaze and bellowed out, “The fort has been conquered! The fort has been conquered!”
The army of the Swan King began to run Helter-shelter.
Led by their commander, the Cock, the Peacock King’s army advanced into the fort and besieged the Swan King. However, the timely arrival of the Swan King’s leader, the Crane, and their troops thwarted the attack, rescuing the Swan King and transporting him to a secure and undisclosed location.
A ferocious and equally matched combat unfolded between the leaders, the Crane and the Cock, as they battled to the death on the battlefield until both ultimately perished.
After a long battle, the Peacock King defeated the Swan King.
The Crow was proud of the victory.
He went to meet the Peacock King.
The Peacock King was happy with the Crow. He said, “What do you want as a reward? Your wish will be granted at once.”
“Make me the king of Grass Island,” said the Crow.
Chief Minister Vulture was shocked at this. He said to the Peacock King, “The Crow cannot be made the king.”
The Crow was furious to hear these words. “Keep quiet,” he cried in anger.
“When two kings are talking to each other, you have no right to interfere.”
The Peacock King was annoyed by the rude behavior of the Crow.
“Throw this crow into the prison,” he ordered his guards. “He does not know how to respect the elders.”
Chief Minister Vulture advised the Peacock King saying, “We have won the battle. This has spread our fame far and wide.
Now we should make peace with the Swan King.”
However, the Peacock King’s overwhelming triumph intoxicated him with pride, causing him to disregard the Vulture’s counsel. He arrogantly proclaimed, “Why should we settle for peace with those whom we have already vanquished?”
The Swan King suffered defeat, but the Chief Minister Sparrow sought to comfort him, assuring, “Worry not, O King. The two kingdoms will soon find peace and amity. I have successfully persuaded the King of Salt Island to assail the Peacock King.”
“But how will that help us?” asked the Swan King.
The Chief Minister Sparrow declared, “We shall also strike Dragon Island then, compelling the Peacock King to seek amends with us. Failure to do so will undoubtedly result in his defeat and, ultimately, the forfeiture of his kingdom.”
And Chief Minister Sparrow was right. His plan succeeded.
While the Salt Island King launched an attack on Grass Island, the Swan King’s army simultaneously assailed Dragon Island. Even then, the Chief Minister Vulture counseled the Peacock King to seek peace with the Swan King, and this time, the Peacock King took heed of the advice.
Chief Minister Vulture and Chief Minister Sparrow warmly embraced each other as they met to discuss peace.
They talked in a friendly atmosphere, with Sparrow welcoming the peace initiative of Vulture. The King of Salt Island was pleased with the newfound friendship between the Swan King and the Peacock King.
As a result, the three kingdoms of Grass Island, Dragon Island, and Salt Island lived happily ever after.
